Bangladesh dengue cases: Dengue Deaths Rise to 164 in Bangladesh as 1,593 New Cases Reported
DHAKA, Sept 15 – Seven more people have died from dengue in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease this year to 164, while 1,593 new patients were hospitalized, health authorities said on Tuesday.
The latest deaths included four women and three men, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The new infections brought the total number of Bangladesh dengue cases recorded since Jan. 1 to 55,163. Men accounted for 62.5% of the cases and women for 37.5%, the data showed.
Of the new patients, 1,004 were men and 589 were women. People aged 21 to 25 accounted for the largest age group, with 253 cases.
Hospitals in Dhaka division, excluding Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations, reported the highest number of new admissions at 383. Khulna recorded 290, followed by Dhaka North with 171, Chattogram with 165, Barishal with 159, Dhaka South with 132, Rajshahi with 137, Mymensingh with 82, Rangpur with 65 and Sylhet with nine.
A total of 50,941 dengue patients have been discharged from hospitals this year, including 1,566 in the past 24 hours. Some 4,058 patients remained hospitalised nationwide as of Tuesday, according to the DGHS.
Dengue cases have increased sharply in recent weeks. Bangladesh recorded 20,536 cases and 43 deaths in August, the highest monthly total so far this year. In the first 15 days of September, 19,317 cases and 67 deaths were reported, according to the health authorities.
Dhaka division, excluding the two city corporations, has recorded 9,112 hospital admissions since the beginning of the year. Khulna has reported 8,963 cases, Chattogram 7,929 and Barishal 7,868.
Among the city corporations, Dhaka South has recorded 6,701 cases and 51 deaths, the highest number of deaths reported by a city corporation. Dhaka North has recorded 6,383 cases.
Dengue, which is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is endemic in Bangladesh and typically rises during and after the country’s monsoon season.
