Bangladesh Jamaat Announces Nationwide Protests on October 28, Seeks Justice for 2006 Violence

DHAKA, Oct 25 — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a two-day programmed to mark the October 28, 2006, political violence, demanding justice for those involved in the incident.
The programmed includes a central discussion meeting in Dhaka on October 27, followed by protests, discussion meetings and prayer gatherings across the country on October 28, according to a party statement issued on Sunday.
Jamaat Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Parwar announced the programmed in a statement sent to the media.
In the statement, Parwar described the violence in Dhaka on October 28, 2006, involving sticks and boat oars, as a dark chapter in the country’s political history. He alleged that the incident marked the beginning of a prolonged period of authoritarianism, democratic erosion and restrictions on citizens’ rights.
Expressing frustration over the lack of judicial accountability nearly two decades after the incident, Parwar called on the government to arrest those allegedly responsible, including the perpetrators and planners, and ensure exemplary punishment.
Under the announced programmed, Jamaat units at the district, metropolitan and upazila levels will organize demonstrations, discussions and prayer events on October 28. Senior central and local leaders are expected to attend the programmed.
The party has urged all its organizational units to take the necessary steps to implement the schedule. It has also called on people from different walks of life, including farmers, workers and students, to participate in the events.
