Court Rejects Bid to Reinstate Rabiul Alam, 8 Others in Tanjil Murder Case

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A Dhaka court Monday rejected a petition seeking to reinstate nine people, including Road Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, as accused in the murder case involving Deepto TV broadcast official Tanjil Jahan Tamim.

The 13th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zahidul Islam rejected the revision petition after a hearing, said court bench assistant Sohel Mia.

The nine had previously been discharged from the case after investigators said they found no specific evidence against them. Tamim’s father, Sultan Ahmed, challenged the decision in court.

“The complainant is not satisfied with the order. We will move the High Court against it,” said Abdul Alim, a lawyer representing Tamim’s father.

Tamim was attacked at his home in the Mahanagar Residential Area of Dhaka’s Hatirjheel on Oct. 10, 2024. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

His father filed a murder case at Hatirjheel police station the following day, naming 16 people and accusing 11 to 12 unidentified individuals.

The named accused included Mirza Abdul Latif, managing director of developer Pleasant Properties; Rabiul Alam, a central executive committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party; and Mohammad Mamun, a deputy director of the Department of Narcotics Control.

Police said at the time that Pleasant Properties, a company associated with Rabiul Alam, had built a residential building on land owned by Tamim’s father under a development agreement. Investigators alleged that a dispute over the distribution of apartments in the building led to the attack on Tamim.

After completing its investigation, the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit of the Police Bureau of Investigation submitted a charge sheet on Dec. 10, 2025, against 13 people and a separate charge sheet against a juvenile.

Investigators recommended that Rabiul Alam and eight others be discharged, citing a lack of specific evidence against them.

Tamim’s father filed a no-objection petition against the recommendation on Jan. 8. On March 3, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid rejected the petition, accepted the charge sheet and discharged the nine.

The nine discharged defendants are Mohammad Mamun, Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Fazlur Rahman, Arian, Nasrin Akter, Russell, Mahfuzur Rahman, Mozammel Haque Kabir and Imam Hossain.

The 13 people charged in the case include Pleasant Properties Managing Director Mirza Abdul Latif, CEO Faizul Ahmed alias Sumon, Mamunur Rashid Mamun, Korban Ali, S.M. Ibrahim Hossain, Badhon, Gazi Zakir Hossain, Russell, Monir Hossain, Shahraj Uddin, Amirul Islam alias Amir, Sumon Mallik and Mahfuzar Rahman.

The latest court order does not affect proceedings against those already charged in the case.
