NEW DELHI: Star Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen feels the advent of Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India program has been a recreation changer as athletes can center of attention on their recreation with out being worried about finances.
The TOPS and Khelo India program had been offered by way of the central govt in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
The govt looks after the investment of the athletes beneath the 2 schemes.
“Normally, when we represent India we have to use our money but with TOPS, that has changed. So we are able to focus on our game and win medals,” Nikhat stated all the way through a panel dialogue all the way through the ‘National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat @100′.
“When I started boxing there weren’t many competitions. A player needs financial support the most and under Khelo India you get that. By taking out this scheme the PM has given the players a lot of support and in Khelo India a lot of women have broken a lot of national records.
“So, it is a motivation and encouragement for ladies to participate in sports activities.”
The two-time world champion praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for motivating the athletes.
“Only a participant understands when they’re going via a foul time or are dropping. I bear in mind when I used to be injured, I used to be clear of boxing for a 12 months and folks would taunt me ‘her profession is over’ that point I driven myself to make a comeback.
“But Modi ji doesn’t just congratulate us on winning, he tries to motivate us before the competition.
Rio Paralympic gold medalists Deepa Malikwho was also part of the panel, recalled talking to the PM on “Chai consistent with Charcha” and how Modi asked people to use the term ‘Divyang’ for specially-abled.
“In 2015, he proposed the phrase Divyang for us. There had been a large number of repercussions on social media. But he stated ‘Let us center of attention on skill past disabilities’.
“But at that time I said ‘when we say specially-abled in English, then why can’t we say Divyang in Hindi’.”
