CHENNAI: world hockey will go back to the town after an opening of 16 years with the Men’s Asian Championship to be held right here on the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium within the remaining week of August this 12 months.
The males’s Asia Cup hockey championship in 2007 used to be the remaining world hockey tournament that came about in Chennai.
“The dates for the event have not been finalized yet but it’ll tentatively be held in the last week of August. Representatives from Hockey India have inspected the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium and suggested a few things to change. We will make all the necessary changes (such as re-laying the astro-turf) and get the stadium ready on time,” Tamil Nadu minister for youth welfare and sports development Udhayanidhi Stalin told the media during an interaction on Wednesday.
Apart from Udhayanidhi, Tamil Nadu’s sports secretary Atulya Misra and member secretary of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, J Meghanatha Reddy, were also present in the meeting.
The newly appointed minister has been quite active and has taken a few quick decisions to fast-track overall sports development in the state and make Tamil Nadu a model for sports in the country.
The state government is keen on developing the grassroots-level infrastructure, scout talent across the state and train them for the future, and also setting up three state-of-the-art Centers for Sports Science in Tamil Nadu.
“We’ll build three centers for sports in Madurai, Nilgiris and Chennai. We have also signed an MoU with Sri Ramachandra Center of Sports Science to help the current players use the facilities,” Udhayanidhi defined.
Moreover, Udhayanidhi has asked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister of teen affairs and sports activities Anurag Thakur to allot Khelo India to Tamil Nadu subsequent 12 months.
“We want to host Khelo India next year and have already conveyed our interest to the central government and are waiting for their confirmation,” Udhayanidhi added.
The minister published that the state govt will spend Rs 25 crore to renovate 5 stadiums — Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium and Velachery Aquatic Complex quickly.
Tamil Nadu Champions Foundation, a public-private initiative to enhance younger sports activities aspirants, has roped in former India skipper and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni as its logo ambassador.
“On the final leg of the Chief Minister’s Trophy, we are planning to release the anthem and mascot of TN Champions Foundation,” Udhayanidhi published.
