Two cousins drown while fishing in Moulvibazar waterbody

MOULVIBAZAR, Bangladesh — Two cousins drowned while fishing in a waterbody in Juri upazila of Moulvibazar district on Wednesday, family members and police said.
The deceased were Ononno Das, 7, son of Amal Das of Amtoil village in Juri, and his cousin Durjoy Das, 12, son of Narayan Das of Bhairab Bazar in Sreemangal. Ononno was a Class 2 student at a local school, while Durjoy was in Class 4.
The incident occurred in Amtoil village under Paschim Juri union.
Babul Ahmed, a member of the local union parishad, said Ononno lived with his family in Barlekha, while Durjoy had arrived in Amtoil with his mother on Tuesday to attend funeral rites for Ononno’s grandmother.
The two cousins went fishing in a nearby waterbody Wednesday morning, family members said.
A villager who was cutting grass later spotted the children floating in the water. With the help of other locals, the villager took them to Juri Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Family members said they believe one of the children accidentally fell into the water and the other drowned while trying to rescue him.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Juri police station, said the family did not file a complaint. The bodies were handed over to the family without autopsies and were later cremated according to religious rites.
