Tarique Rahman’s UNGA Visit Draws 30 International Engagements, Says State Minister
Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir says Tarique Rahman’s four-day UNGA 81 visit showcased the new government’s commitments and expanded diplomatic engagement.
Bangladesh’s participation in the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly was successful and provided an opportunity to present the new government’s commitments internationally, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said on Monday.
Speaking at a news conference in Dhaka, Kabir said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman used the four-day visit to promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
“The overall assessment is that Bangladesh’s participation in this session was successful,” Kabir said, adding that participants in meetings and bilateral talks had expressed support for what he described as Bangladesh’s “new democratic journey.”
Kabir said Rahman took part in 30 international engagements during the visit, including an address to the General Assembly, speeches at seven high-level meetings, bilateral talks with 11 countries and meetings with senior officials from 10 international organizations, including the United Nations.
The prime minister met the presidents of Turkey and Iran, the vice president of the Maldives, and the prime ministers of Bhutan, Pakistan, Thailand, Croatia and Haiti, as well as Kuwait’s crown prince, Kabir said.
He also held courtesy meetings with the deputy prime ministers and foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, he said.
According to Kabir, Rahman met U.N. Secretary-General, the president of the World Bank Group, the U.N. high commissioners for refugees and human rights, the U.N. Secretary-General’s special envoy on Myanmar, and senior figures from international organizations and businesses during the visit.
