Nasa Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Majumder Shown Arrested in Gulshan Van Driver Shooting Case
DHAKA — A Dhaka court on Monday ordered Nasa Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Majumder to be shown arrested in a case filed over an alleged attempt to kill a van driver during the July uprising in the capital’s Gulshan area.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah granted police’s application to formally arrest Majumder in the case and ordered that he remain in jail after a hearing.
Majumder was brought before the court as Gulshan Police Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam, the investigating officer in the case, sought his arrest in connection with the attempted murder case.
The investigating officer told the court that police had found evidence indicating that Majumder allegedly directed the accused to shoot victim Jabbar Ali Hawladar with the intention of killing him and provided financial assistance in connection with the attack.
Police argued that showing Majumder arrested in the case was necessary to ensure a proper investigation.
Nazrul Islam Majumder arrest and remand
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Majumder in the capital’s Gulshan area on Oct. 1, 2024.
The following day, a Dhaka court granted police seven days to interrogate him in a murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station over the death of Emon Hossain Gazi. He was later sent to jail after the remand period ended.
While Majumder was in custody, police on Aug. 18 sought an order to show him arrested in the Gulshan attempted murder case. The court scheduled Monday’s hearing in his presence.
Van driver shot during July uprising
According to the case statement, anti-discrimination protesters were demonstrating in front of Confidence Tower in Shahjadpur, Gulshan, on July 19, 2024, during the nationwide movement that preceded the fall of the Awami League government.
The case alleges that police and Awami League activists opened fire on the protesters. Van driver Jabbar Ali Hawladar was shot during the incident.
Hawladar filed the attempted murder case with Gulshan Police Station on Dec. 11, 2024.
The case names 109 people as accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The allegations in the case have not been proven in court, and the accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
