Mymensingh child death: 6-year-old child found dead body in Mymensingh, teenager arrested
Police say the child was allegedly assaulted and struck with a spade after being taken from his home; investigation is underway
MYMENSINGH, Bangladesh — A six-year-old child was found dead body in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday, hours after a 15-year-old boy allegedly took him from his home on the pretext of collecting jujube fruit, police said.
The teenager, who lives in the same village as the child, has been detained in connection with the incident, according to police.
Family members said the child was taken from his home at around 10 a.m. After he could not be found, relatives began searching the area. They later questioned the teenager, who reportedly gave inconsistent answers before telling them that he had seen the child lying near a toilet at his house.
Relatives went to the location and found the child’s body wrapped in cloth, according to the family and police.
Police said their preliminary questioning indicated that the teenager had taken the child into a room and allegedly attempted to sexually assault him. When the child screamed, the teenager allegedly struck him with a spade, causing his death, police said.
Police recovered the body from the scene at about 2 p.m. and sent it to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College for an autopsy.
Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Nandail Model Police Station, said a teenager had been detained on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
“Legal proceedings are underway,” Islam said.
The allegations have not been tested in court. The autopsy report is expected to provide further information about the cause of death.
