Magura news: Wound Found on Bangladesh Youth Leader’s Head After Death at Bus Counter

MAGURA, Bangladesh — A local youth political leader was found unconscious at a bus counter in Magura early Wednesday and later pronounced dead, with a wound discovered at the back of his head during preparations for his burial, prompting a police investigation into the cause of death.
Shaker Hossain, 39, senior joint convener of the Magura municipal unit of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was found at the Royal Express transport counter at the central bus terminal in Parnanduali around 5:35 a.m., according to transport officials.
Bipul Kumar Das, the transport company’s Magura counter manager, said Hossain arrived for his shift around 5 a.m. and spoke with him by phone at about 5:25 a.m. A conductor later reported that Hossain was lying unconscious at the counter.
He was taken to Magura 250-bed Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead.
Family members initially took the body home, believing he may have died of a stroke or heart disease. During preparations for burial, however, they noticed a puncture-like wound at the back of his head and returned the body to the hospital for an autopsy.
Emergency department physician Khandaker Mainul Hasan said an examination after shaving the hair around the wound confirmed a penetrating injury. He said it was not yet possible to determine whether the wound was caused by a firearm or another source without forensic examination.
An autopsy would be conducted to establish the cause of death, he said.
Hossain’s relatives alleged that he had been deliberately shot and killed. Mohammad Kutubuddin, a relative and member of the Magura district BNP, said witnesses reported seeing two people arrive on a motorcycle near the time of the incident. One passenger reportedly heard a gunshot, he said.
Kutubuddin also said bloodstains were found on and beneath the table where Hossain had been sitting.
Magura Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain visited the scene around 10 a.m. Wednesday. He said authorities had not determined whether the death was a homicide.
Police and a Criminal Investigation Department crime scene team secured the area and collected evidence, he said, adding that investigators were examining all possibilities and would consider the autopsy findings.
The cause and circumstances of Hossain’s death remain under investigation.
