DHAKA — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered authorities to expedite construction of Dhaka’s inner circular ring road as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion in the capital.

He issued the directive at a meeting Sunday to review progress on the project at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to his Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplur.

The prime minister instructed the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and the Local Government Division to jointly review the existing project plan and accelerate construction, Shiplur said.

Rahman also directed the authorities to identify and quickly remove obstacles to implementation, ensure effective coordination among the agencies involved and set a realistic deadline for completion.

He stressed the need for visible progress on the project at the earliest, according to the deputy press secretary.

Road Transport and Bridges and Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Habib-ur-Rashid Habib, and administrators of Dhaka South and Dhaka North city corporations Abdus Salam and Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton were among those present at the meeting.
