BNP dissolves 3 Dhaka city committees, expels 10 after Mirpur health centre demolition
BNP dissolves its Dhaka North, North Jubo Dal and West Chhatra Dal committees after the Mirpur health centre demolition and expels 10 leaders.
DHAKA, Sept. 30 — The BNP has dissolved its Dhaka North metropolitan committee, along with the Dhaka North Jubo Dal and Dhaka West Chhatra Dal committees, amid criticism following the demolition of a health centre in Mirpur.
The party also expelled 10 leaders from the BNP and its affiliated organisations, according to separate notices issued Wednesday night.
A notice signed by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Mohammad Munir Hossain said the 51-member Dhaka North metropolitan BNP convening committee, led by Aminul Haque as convener and Mostafa Zaman as member secretary, had been dissolved. A new committee will be announced soon, it said.
The committee was formed on Nov. 4, 2024. Haque currently serves as state minister for youth and sports.
The notice also said Khalil Chowdhury, joint convener of Shah Ali thana BNP; Anwar Hossain, general secretary of the C-Block unit; and Hafizur Rahman Shubhra, a member of the Dhaka North metropolitan committee, had been expelled from all party posts and their primary membership over alleged unethical and organizationally damaging activities.
The action followed the demolition of the Radha health centre in Shah Ali on Sept. 24. Allegations emerged that several local BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaders were involved. CCTV footage reportedly showed several leaders at the thana and ward levels at the scene.
The Dhaka North Jubo Dal committee was also dissolved, with the organisation citing the expiry of its tenure. Sharif Uddin Jewel was its convener and Sazzadul Miraj its member secretary.
Jubo Dal separately announced the expulsion of five leaders from Shah Ali thana: former joint general secretary Nur Alam and leaders Sazzadur Rahman Mishu, Mohammad Sohal, Kabir Hossain and Akbar Hossain.
Miraj was reportedly among those who tried to stop the vandalism and informed police officials about the incident. He also raised allegations of police inaction and involvement of the then officer-in-charge of Shah Ali police station in media reports.
The Dhaka West Chhatra Dal committee was also dissolved after its tenure expired, according to a notice signed by the organization’s office secretary. The nine-member partial committee was formed on Dec. 24, 2024, with Robin Khan as president and Akram Ahmed as general secretary. It covered 11 police stations in greater Mirpur and Mohammadpur.
Separately, the BNP-affiliated Swechchhasebak Dal expelled Aktar, convener of its Darus Salam thana unit, and member secretary Hafizur Rahman, according to a notice signed by the organization’s assistant office secretary Osman Gani.
