DHAKA — Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram left Dhaka for Tanzania on Sunday to attend the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, the Parliament Secretariat said.

He departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2:30 p.m. for the Tanzanian city, according to the statement.

The speaker is scheduled to attend various sessions of the IPU Assembly 2026, which will be held from Oct. 5 to 9.

The assembly is being held under the theme, “Advancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusion, trust and opportunities for all.” The IPU Governing Council is scheduled to elect a new president on the final day of the assembly, Oct. 9.

Parliament Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu and lawmakers Sarwar Jamal Nizam, A.E. Sultan Mahmud Babu, Md. Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, S.K. Azizul Bari, Humam Qader Chowdhury, Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, Sansila Jebrin and Rokeya Begum are accompanying the speaker.

Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on Oct. 11.
